Becky Davis visits 3rd, 4th, and 5th graders at Vanderburg Elementary School. They enjoyed learning about the Mojave Desert and some students thought the screwbean mesquite seed pods looked like worms.

It began with a simple question posed by a small organization called the Friends of Winchester. How do we get children out of their homes and into the natural environment — the desert? A teacher of twelve years, Becky Davis’ response was, “You have to excite them, something that will have them wanting to learn more about the world in which they live and play.”

Getting children excited about the desert where they live was Becky’s goal as author of Red Carpet Chronicles: Mojave Desert Plants Reveal All To Terri Terrain. Becky Davis leads audiences through the lives and mysteries of the Mojave Desert plants through a vivacious and knowledgeable reporter named Terri Terrain. Children, as well as adults, will be intrigued with answers to questions such as: What plants can treat burns and bug bites? Which bush looks dead during drought times, but comes quickly back to life and bloom as soon as it rains?

The illustrated picture book, sponsored by the non-profit organization that supports the Winchester Park and Desert Demonstration Garden in Las Vegas, teaches children about desert plants that are “water-smart” additions to the landscape. Not only are desert plants natural born survivors; their unique characteristics can capture the imagination of children.

Becky features speaking topics such as Stars of the Desert — where audiences learn about the special features of each plant; how they acquired their characteristics; and how they thrive in a modern desert landscape; and in which she shares props and accessories from the plants of Red Carpet Chronicles to demonstrate the beauty of the desert to audiences. Becky also speaks on Book Concept & Development — discussing how the idea of the red carpet came about, and then developed, into plants with eyes and smiles.
